IT bids in Chicago, IL.

Chicago runs on derivatives and futures exchange operations, third-party logistics and freight brokerage, food processing and industrial ingredients.

Those sectors buy IT differently from each other, which is why a single city shortlist is rarely useful and three priced bids on one sheet usually are.

Compliance

What actually drives IT spend in Chicago.

FINRA supervision and recordkeeping rules

CME Group and Cboe anchor a dense ring of proprietary trading firms, introducing brokers and clearing operations across the Loop and the West Loop, and even a twenty-person shop that carries a broker-dealer registration inherits FINRA's supervision, communications-retention and business-continuity obligations. That turns ordinary MSP decisions — mailbox journaling, chat archiving, who can approve a firewall change — into examination evidence, which is not how a general-practice provider is used to thinking about a helpdesk contract.

PCI DSS v4.0.1

Chicago's restaurant groups, ticketing and hospitality operators, and the retail chains headquartered around the metro run card-present estates spread over dozens of leased locations, each with its own network closet and its own installer history. The v4.0.1 requirements on segmentation evidence and on inventorying scripts in the payment page are exactly the sort of ongoing work that gets written out of a low monthly bid and reappears as a project fee.

The other option

Hiring one administrator instead.

The honest comparison is not salary against monthly fee. It is one administrator plus tooling and cover, against a managed contract.

Questions

What buyers in Chicago ask us.

With 195 MSPs in Chicago, why is it still hard to get comparable bids?
Because the 195 are not one bench. Against roughly 32,400 establishments in the 20-to-499-employee band that is 6.0 providers per thousand, but they range from four-person suburban shops to national firms with a Loop sales office. The practical fix is to fix the unit yourself: state seat count, site count and after-hours expectations in the RFP, and require every bidder to price against that.
Do Chicago MSPs charge extra for the collar counties?
Frequently, and it is rarely on the first page. Providers based downtown often price onsite response for Cook County inside the monthly fee and treat DuPage, Lake, Will and Kane as travel-billable, while suburban providers do the reverse for the Loop. If you have offices in both rings, ask for the onsite clause and the travel radius in writing before comparing monthly numbers.
Our Illinois firm has a broker-dealer affiliate. Does that change the MSP requirements?
Substantially. FINRA supervision and recordkeeping obligations mean email and chat retention, access approval records and a tested business-continuity plan become examinable artifacts, not internal hygiene. Ask each bidder whether it has produced evidence for an examination before, who signs the change-control record, and whether archiving is included or a separate licence. A provider that has never sat through one will underprice the work.
Is an in-house hire cheaper than an MSP in Chicago?
At small scale, seldom. The BLS metro median for a network and computer systems administrator here is about $103,170, and loaded cost lands well above that once benefits and payroll taxes are added. One person also cannot cover nights, holidays or a second site, and arrives without an EDR licence, a patching platform or a SOC behind them. Compare one administrator plus tooling against a contract, not salary against monthly fee.
